When the flat steel was made it was stamped with the company logo and a date code. The steel was later made into all kinds of parts including gas tanks. It is very common to see this stamp on the top or bottom of the tanks. Since the original was an ink stamp and sometimes very light, they are covered in dirt, undercoating or just faded away. They are usually seen on the protected side of the tank that faces the body of the car in countless locations, sometimes cut off at an edge. They are always square on the sheet steel.
